Another 25 cut, but Tower are equal

Tower Transit's 25 route has been dealt a second substantial cut during the second half of 2018. In September the Ilford to Mile End short workings were withdrawn albeit alongside a revamped 425 between Clapton and Ilford, with vehicles following suit. The peak vehicle requirement (PVR) on the 25 dropped from 59 to 40.

From December, the 25 was withdrawn from running between Oxford Circus, Holles Street and Holborn Circus/City Thameslink Station. The night part of the route however still continues to Oxford Circus, and has been renumbered as an N25. This change of the route has seen the PVR drop further from 40 to 32. The PVR saving of 27 has been absorbed by Tower Transit with the revamp of the 425 and the tender win of the 452.

On the same date as the 25s cutback, the West London division of Tower Transit were having a more successful time with the taking over of route 452 between Kensal Rise and Vauxhall from Abellio London, using vehicles made spare from the 25s recent cuts.

Central London route changes Part Four

On Saturday 24th November, RATP-dev London United's Route 10 became the first Central London bus route to be cut in its entirety in conjunction with the Oxford Street and Central London bus consultations by TfL. With the aim of removing "excess" bus routes [capacity] off London's flagship shopping street, it was decided that Routes 10 and 23 would be merged at Marble Arch to form a new route running between Westbourne Park and Hammersmith. The former sections of each route, the 23 from Marble Arch to Aldwych and the 10 from Marble Arch to King's Cross, would be withdrawn and no longer served. Marble Arch to Aldwych is still be achievable on one bus by using Route 6, or with a short walk to use Route 139. Marble Arch to King's Cross would still be achievable on Route 390.

These route changes leaves the British Museum unserved by London's famous red buses, and plenty of ordinary punters out in the cold at Marble Arch when their bus from Westbourne Park or Hammersmith fails to find Oxford Street. This was in fact the second recent iteration of Route 23, having only been withdrawn between Liverpool Street and Aldwych in late 2017.

The final London United Route 10 was LT166 in the early hours of November 24th, followed by DN33784 on the first new Tower Transit 23.

The new route, which now runs from Westbourne Park to Hammersmith kept the 23 route number, and stayed with the 23s operator, Tower Transit, at Westbourne Park (X), as well as keeping its previous E40H DNH allocation. London United's Route 10 was withdrawn in its entirety, and its allocation swapped to Route 27 causing further fleet reshuffles inside London United.

Central London route changes Part Three

Only a small change this time, just one route in fact!

At the end of September, the third stage of changes to the bus services in Central London took place. These changes are all part of TfL's ongoing review of bus services in London. Some of these changes are to match the present level of demand, whilst others are to facilitate the thinning out of bus numbers along Oxford Street to remove congestion, and a few route amendments associated with the imminent opening of the Crossrail Elizabeth Line.

An in-depth look at all the changes coming up can be found on the TfL consultation page here:
https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/west-end-bus-changes/

The changes that took place on Saturday 30th September 2017 affected Route 23, with a knock-on implication for Route 11.

Routes 23
Route 23 was withdrawn between Liverpool Street bus station and Aldwych. The frequencies remained unchanged.
As a result of this cut-back, Route 11 was re-extended back to Liverpool Street bus station from Aldwych to maintain the Aldwych-Liverpool Street link. This route had been cut-back due to roadworks around Parliament Square.

The result of this means now that there is only one direct bus link [at a reduced frequency] between Trafalgar Square through to Bank and Liverpool Street in the City. It is a testament to the severe increase in congestion [caused by long-term roadworks and road amendment schemes] and dwindling passenger users that has meant that this change, whilst significant, will hardly be noticed.

It would have been expected for the remaining VNWs on Route 23 to be withdrawn following the massive PVR cut but a few still survive as spares covering for the DNH refurbishment process at Westbourne Park

Route 11
The route had been (temporarily) cut-back to Aldwych following the ongoing roadworks around Parliament Square and Victoria. As a result of the 23's (permanent) cut-back to Aldwych, the 11 was re-extended back to its original terminus at Liverpool Street bus station maintaining the link lost by the 23.

Central London route changes Part Two

Over the last weekend, the second stage of changes to the bus services in Central London took place.

The changes that took place on Saturday 15th July 2017 affected routes 3, 22/N22, 137, 159 and C2.

Routes 3/N3
Route 3 was withdrawn between Regent Street and Trafalgar Square. The route now terminates at Trafalgar Square (Cockspur Street) and stands on King Charles II Street at Piccadilly Circus, the former route 22 and N22 stand. The temporarily reduced frequencies on the route for roadworks have now become permanent.

There has been no change to route N3 at present, which continues to run through to Oxford Circus from Bromley.

It is planned that routes 3 and N3 will be rerouted from Trafalgar Square to serve Leicester Square and Russell Square.

Routes 22/N22
Routes 22/N22 were withdrawn between Piccadilly Circus and Green Park Station, and then rerouted to serve Oxford Circus via the present C2 routing via Berkeley Square, terminating at Henrietta Place via Margaret Street. Routes 22/N22 no longer run along Piccadilly from Green Park to Piccadilly Circus.
This change saw route C2 withdrawn between Oxford Circus and Victoria. The frequencies on route 22 have been reduced to every 7-8 mins Monday-Friday. The Merton garage allocation of the route has been transferred to Putney garage.

This led to Berkeley Square to have no night bus service for the most part of one night, although that section has small levels of boarding or alighting through the night. The last night C2 did run from Victoria fully blinded along the old route, but for most of the night, the area had no service.

Routes 137/N137
Route 137 was cut back to Marble Arch (Park Lane), and such was withdrawn running along Oxford Street due to bus congestion. There have been no changes to bus frequencies on the route.

Route 159
Route 159 has been withdrawn along Oxford Street owing to congestion. The route is now scheduled to terminate at Oxford Circus, Holles Street, as opposed to Marble Arch. The 24 hour night service has been unaffected and route N159 still continues to serve Marble Arch. This change has been reported to be temporary due in part to the Westminster roadworks, however, like previous cutbacks to routes such as the 7, 8 and 15, this "temporary" withdrawal between Marble Arch and Oxford Circus is expected to become permanent.

Route 159 used to run to Paddington Basin as recently as 2010 as cover for the cut back of route 15 from Paddington, but the 159 withdrawn from Paddington back to Marble Arch only four years later in 2014. The route ran up to West Hampstead from Streatham as recently as the early 1990s. The northern part of the route beyond Oxford Street became the current 139 route back in March 1992.

Route C2
Route C2 was cut back from Victoria to Regent Street, Conduit Street, taking the terminus and stand of Route 3 which has been cut back to Trafalgar Square. The 24 hour night service, NC2, has also been withdrawn from Victoria. This cut back has been offset between Hyde Park and Regent Street with the rerouting of the 22 and N22. The link between Berkley Square and Victoria has been lost however.

Central London route changes Part One

As part of TfL's ongoing review of bus services in London, yesterday saw the first part of many upcoming changes to bus services in Central London.

The changes that took place on Saturday 17th June 2017 affected routes 6, 73/N73, 172, 242 and 390.

Route 6
Route 6 was withdrawn along Oxford Street and Regent Street, and instead re-routed via Park Lane and Piccadilly between Marble Arch and Piccadilly Circus. There have been no other changes to the route. This re-routing has in fact provided a direct bus link between Green Park/Piccadilly and Marble Arch/Park Lane for the first time.

Route 73/N73
Route 73/N73 was cut back from Victoria to Oxford Circus as a result of passenger number decreases following the improvements to the Victoria Line, and to improve the reliability of the route. These changes are linked to the 390 which was re-routed to Victoria along the route of the withdrawn 73 to maintain the links between King's Cross and Victoria.

Route 172
Route 172 was withdrawn between St. Paul's and Ludgate Circus, then extended up Farringdon Street to Clerkenwell Green with no changes to bus frequencies. This change has allowed the old 172 stand at St. Paul's to be used by route 242 after its own cut back from Tottenham Court Road.
Most of the buses on route 172 were not able to display the new Clerkenwell Green terminus, with only 9001 (right) and 9021 reported as being able to do so. Most vehicles showed blank with an A4 sheet of paper in the front.

Route 242
Route 242 was withdrawn between Tottenham Court Road and St. Paul's with no change in frequencies. At St. Paul's, buses now use the 172 route stand which was vacated by the re-routing of route 172 to serve Clerkenwell Green instead. The move away from Tottenham Court Road has meant the vacant 242 stand could be taken by route 8 which was re-routed at Tottenham Court Road to use this.

Route 390
Route 390 was withdrawn between Marble Arch and Notting Hill Gate, and then extended from Marble Arch via Park Lane and Hyde Park Corner to terminate at Victoria, following route 73 and using the 73 route stand in Victoria Bus Station. Route 390 has also seen an increase in frequency, up to x6mins Mon-Fri from x8mins and an extra eight vehicles on the route to match this, taken from roadworks frequency reductions from routes 24 and 9, 10, and 148. The vehicles that have moved from London United to Metroline for the 390 change are LT175, 460 & 461.

Other changes
Route 8/N8
The temporary withdrawal of route 8 between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road has been made permanent. Route 8 has also been re-routed slightly at Tottenham Court Road to use the route 242 stand which now only runs as far as St. Paul's.
No changes to route N8.

Route 15/N15
The temporary withdrawal of route 15 between Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square became permanent.
Route N15 would resume running from Oxford Circus again to and from Romford.
